Xbox fans can’t get hold of new handheld ROG Ally X console

Microsoft launched its new handheld console the ROG Xbox Ally X last month, but fans are still struggling to get hold of one.

The cheaper ROG Xbox Ally is, according to Microsoft, “the essential handheld at a great value for everyone from the casual player to the avid enthusiast” while the more premium ROG Xbox Ally X is designed to be “the ultimate high-performance handheld, built for the most demanding players.”

“Everything at Xbox starts with the player,” continued a statement. “That’s why we’ve dedicated years to reimagining how to make it easier to enjoy the games you love—wherever you are. Whether you’re at home or on the go, your favourite games should follow you.”

The ROG Xbox Ally costs £499.99 and the ROG Xbox Ally X is priced at £799.99. These prices have been heavily criticised by some gamers, especially when compared to the Xbox Series X (£499.99), the Nintendo Switch 2 (£395) and the base Steam Deck (£349).

However, almost a month since it launched, fans are still struggling across the UK to get hold of the consoles. Official retailers Currys and ASUS are both currently sold out of the ROG Xbox Ally X console while a majority of places stocking the base model are also out of stock. On eBay, the ROG Xbox Ally X is being sold for more than £1000.

“I’m so fed up of no stock,” one fan wrote on Reddit. “I’m so fucking fed up of the amount of scalpers on eBay and never getting a chance to get my hands on the X from Curry’s. Stock is all over the place and I’m either left having to pay over 1k on eBay for one or hope Curry’s has a restock sometime soon. Fuck scalpers,” they added.

“Just be patient and you’ll get one for RRP in a few weeks. The human mind is feeble. We always want new and shiny even when it’s not necessarily that much better. It’ll pay off. Just wait,” replied another more patient gamer.

Last week, more details leaked about the successor to the Xbox Series X/S. According to insiders, the new console will be a PC hybrid and could cost more than $1,000.

While those rumours are still unconfirmed, it does back up what Xbox boss Sarah Bond teased following the launch of the ROG Ally. “The next-gen console is going to be a very premium, very high-end curated experience,” Bond explained in an interview with Mashable. “You’re starting to see some of the thinking we have in this handheld but I don’t want to give it all away.”
