Are you excited to look for Shiny Pokemon in Pokemon Legends: Z-A? These creatures are the rarest of the rare, with unique color palettes that are vastly different from the usual variants. Naturally, finding them is no easy task, though there are a few exceptions.
What are the characteristics of Shiny Pokemon?
- Shiny Pokemon have a different color compared to the regular versions. For instance, a Shiny Pikachu tends to be orange-brown instead of yellow, whereas a Shiny Mareep is pink instead of light yellow.
- They have a sparkle icon if you check their nameplate in menus.
- When you summon them, there’s an additional flash/sparkle and sound effect that plays.

Shiny Pokemon from Wild Zones
For the most part, Shiny Pokemon in Pokemon Legends: Z-A tend to be extremely rare, as was the case in previous games in the series. If you really want to find one, then you should keep your eyes peeled when exploring Lumiose City, especially Wild Zones.
Wild Zones are specific parts of the city where you can capture Pokemon that are roaming around. The further you are in the campaign, the more Wild Zones become available, and each one has at least five species that you can catch. One of these spawns might turn out to be a Shiny, though it’s not always guaranteed.
Here’s our suggestion if you have the patience for it:
- Visit a Wild Zone and target every Pokemon you see just to check if a Shiny has spawned.
- If you don’t see one, leave the Wild Zone and rest on a bench. This advances the time/day-night cycle, and also refreshes the spawns in the region.
- Check the Wild Zone again and keep your fingers crossed.

Shiny Pokemon from quests
Another option is to undertake quests that guarantee a Shiny Pokemon. One, in particular, is Side Mission 17: A Shiny Mareep. Here’s what you need to know:
- The quest comes from an NPC named Duve, who’s right next to Wild Zone 1.
- Enter Wild Zone 1 and use a Pokemon with Rock or Fighting abilities to destroy the boulders.
- Climb up the ladder and look for a pink Mareep on the rooftop.
- Complete the quest and capture the Mareep to obtain your first Shiny.
The Shiny Charm from Mable’s Research
Last but not least, you can reach level 50 in Mable’s Research to obtain the Shiny Charm. This accessory increases the chances that you’ll encounter a Shiny Pokemon while exploring. However, this unlockable item requires painstaking effort, since you need to catch numerous creatures, complete your Pokedex, do a bunch of evolutions, and tackle all sorts of objectives. You can check the Mable’s Research menu to see the requirements.
That does it for our guide on where to find Shiny Pokemon in Pokemon Legends: Z-A. Trying to get a Shiny variant for every single species is a tall task, so it’s up to you if you want to go through this ordeal. In any case, if you’d like to find other options, you can read our Alpha Pokemon guide. Likewise, we have a best early-game Pokemon guide for your initial squad.
You don’t need to face the challenges in Lumiose City all by your lonesome. We’ve got a Pokemon Legends: Z-A guides hub to help you go from the bottom to the very top of the rankings.
