Mia Goth, Christoph Waltz, Charles Dance and Ralph Ineson also star in the film, which Del Toro himself has adapted.

It comes three years after Mexican auteur Del Toro brought to life an adaptation of another beloved fantasy novel, Pinocchio, while the director is best known for modern classics such as Pan’s Labyrinth, The Devil’s Backbone and the Oscar Best Picture winner The Shape Of Water.

NME has awarded the film four stars and described it as “an achingly gorgeous film that allows [Del Toro’s] monster-loving sensibilities and signature style to come to the fore”.

The review continues: “On a technical level, Frankenstein is utterly stunning. Del Toro conjures eerie moments that will stay with you long after the credits have rolled, whether it’s a pair of arms bursting up from beneath the ice or Victor’s science experiment suddenly coming to life, giving the film its best jump scare. Tamara Deverell’s meticulously detailed production design looks gorgeous throughout, as are the costumes by Kate Hawley – both are certain to receive awards attention come Oscars season.”

“In short, this is a deliciously dark fairy tale that’s as fantastical as it is emotional. Is Del Toro’s Bride Of Frankenstein too much to hope for?”

When will Guillermo Del Toro’s Frankenstein be available to stream on Netflix?

The film had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival in August and began a limited theatrical release around the world on October 17.

However, with Netflix serving as the film’s distributor, it was always intended to land on the streaming service shortly after a brief window when it was shown in cinemas.
