In a three-star review of the series, NME wrote: “At six episodes, Untamed is well paced and structured: it feels substantial enough for a miniseries (unlike many recent examples of the form that have ‘should’ve been a two-hour movie’ energy) without outstaying its welcome. And it’s compulsive enough to demand being wolfed down quickly, without resorting to overly forced cliffhangers to sustain interest.”

“The location might be the freshest thing about Untamed but it remains an easy, enjoyable watch that goes down like a walk in the (national) park.”

In the Untamed finale, Kyle Turner finally uncovers the truth behind Lucy Cook’s death. After surviving a shooting by rogue wildlife officer Shane Maguire, Turner – assisted by Vasquez – brings down Shane and his drug-smuggling operation. Shane is killed in a final confrontation, exposing the park’s corruption.

Turner discovers that his boss, Sam Neill’s park superintendent Paul Souter, is Lucy’s biological father. Years earlier, Lucy had learned Souter’s identity and attempted to blackmail him. In a misguided attempt to scare her off, Souter fired a shot that grazed her leg. Lucy fled, choosing to jump off the cliff rather than be caught. Her death was not murder, but a suicide.

Racked with guilt, Souter confesses to Turner and then takes his own life.

Meanwhile, Turner’s storyline with his ex-wife Jill comes to a head. Jill reveals that, following their son Caleb’s murder, she secretly arranged for Maguire to kill the suspect, explaining her years of emotional distance. This confession leads to a reconciliation between Jill and Turner.

The series ends with Turner and Vasquez honouring Lucy by scattering her ashes in the park. Turner then leaves Yosemite, giving Naya his horse and a box of Caleb’s childhood belongings. Though the park’s secrets are laid bare, Turner finds peace at last.
