A banging techno remix of the iconic Super Mario Bros. theme was performed at Medusa Festival by viral DJ Padre Guilherme.
Padre Guilherme Peixoto has been a priest since 1999 and is currently a parish priest at Portugal’s Archdiocese of Braga. When the pandemic hit, he started livestreaming DJ sets and experimenting with various forms of electronic music to raise money for much-needed church renovations.
He was later invited to “wake up the pilgrims” at 7am before Pope Francis’ 2023 open-air Mass for World Youth Day in Lisbon and the footage of that performance soon went viral. Padre Guilherme has also had his headphones blessed by the late Pope Francis and performed at the base of the Chris The Redeemer statue in Brazil.

Earlier this month, Padre Guilherme performed at Spain’s Medusa Festival alongside dance titans Carl Craig, Afrojack, Armin van Buuren and hundreds more. During his set, he dropped a techno remix of the iconic Super Mario Bros. theme with accompanying visuals, and the moment has exploded on social media.

“I think this is the funniest fucking video I’ve ever seen in my entire life,” wrote one X user. Sharing the clip on his own Instagram, Padre Guilherme wrote: “Music, irreverence, gratitude and a great respect for all who made the Medusa Festival.”

According to his profile on KoolWaters, “Padre Guilherme believes that electronic music is a privileged way to build a better world. On the dance-floor, inclusion, tolerance and respect are promoted. In electronic dance music, those who have faith and those who don’t, dance together. People of different ethnicities and cultures dance together. Music brings humanity together, in its beautiful diversity.”
While Padre Guilherme’s Mario remix probably won’t be coming to the Nintendo Music streaming platform anytime soon, the first Nintendo Switch 2 soundtrack has been added to the service. Last week, the first few tracks from the upcoming Kirby Air Riders joined the library but there’s still no news on the music from Mario Kart World or Donkey Kong Bananza.
In other news, Hollow Knight: Silksong finally has a release date and, according to gamers who’ve played the long-awaited sequel at Gamecom, it lives up to the hype.
