HBO are developing the show based on Alan Moore’s graphic novel with DC Studios head James Gunn and Peter Safran on board to executive produce, according to Variety.
It is the latest DC Studios live-action collaboration with HBO following the 2024 TV series The Penguin, a spin-off of Matt Reeves’ The Batman, starring Colin Farrell and Cristin Milioti.
Conceived originally as a comic serial written by Moore and illustrated by David Lloyd, V For Vendetta made it’s debut in 1982 in the British anthology Warrior, before DC took over publishing it in 1988.
The story is set in Britain in a dystopian, not-too-distant future in which the country is controlled by the fascistic Norsefire party.
An anarchist named V, known for his distinctive Guy Fawkes mask, seeks to topple the government with the help of Evey Hammond, a young woman V rescued from the country’s secret police.

It was previously turned into a feature film in 2005 with Hugo Weaving starring as V and Natalie Portman as Hammond. James McTeigue directed, with the Wachowskis writing the screenplay.
The film is also due to return to cinemas next year as part of a 20th anniversary celebration of the movie.
Elsewhere, James Gunn recently revealed that there are a number of actors lobbying for the part of Batman in the forthcoming film The Brave And The Bold.
The former Guardians Of The Galaxy director is overseeing a reboot of the DC universe of characters, which began on the big screen with this summer’s Superman and will continue next year with Supergirl and Clayface. A Superman sequel, Man Of Tomorrow, is scheduled for 2027.
Batman is yet to make an appearance in the franchise, which exists in a separate timeline to The Batman starring Robert Pattinson. However, an adaptation of The Brave And The Bold storyline is in development, which sees Batman fighting alongside his son, Damian Wayne, who takes on the mantle of Robin.
Elsewhere, the sequel to The Batman is also in pre-production now, with the script having been completed by Matt Reeves, who will return as director, and Matson Tomlin. Production is expected to begin in the spring, with a release date set for October 1, 2027.
