Uma Thurman warned Maya Hawke to keep her shoes on when working with Quentin Tarantino

Maya Hawke has shared the joking advice her mother Uma Thurman gave her for working with director Quentin Tarantino.

The Stranger Things star played a member of the Manson Family in Tarantino’s 2019 Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, continuing a family tradition after Thurman worked with the filmmaker on 1994’s Pulp Fiction and the Kill Bill films.

Appearing on the Good Hang podcast with Amy Poehler, Hawke was asked if she was given any advice by her mum for working with him. “’Keep your shoes on,’” Hawke jokingly replied, prompting laughter from both stars and the verdict “perfect advice” from Poehler. Watch the clip below.

The joke is a reference to Tarantino’s focus on female feet in several of his movies, such as the “wiggle your big toe” sequence in Kill Bill Volume One, or in Once Upon A Time In Hollywood where Margot Robbie and others had significant scenes where they were bare foot.

Branded a “foot fetish” by onlookers, Robbie’s co-star even joked about it while accepting a Screen Actor’s Guild award for his role in the movie in 2020. “Quentin has separated more women from their shoes than the TSA,” he quipped in his speech.

In an interview with GQ in 2021, Tarantino himself brushed off the reputation. “There’s a lot of feet in a lot of good directors’ movies” he said. “That’s just good direction.”

Maya Hawke will next be seen in Stranger Things 5, with the final season released in three parts on Netflix. The first chapter will arrive on November 27 at 1am GMT, while the second part will drop at 1am on December 26. Its finale will then air at 1am on New Year’s Day in the UK.

Recently, fans of the show expressed concern for the character of Steve after very little of him was shown in the trailers.
