Tim Burton has shot down rumours that Beetlejuice 3 is in development, and doubts there will be any movement on the film soon.
The director brought back the beloved comedy-horror last year with Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, a sequel to the 1986 movie. Jenna Ortega joined original cast members Winona Ryder and Catherine O’Hara, as well as Michael Keaton in the title role.
The film was well received critically and a box office hit, with recent reports claiming there was a third film being planned. However, when asked about the threequel in an interview, Burton said it’s the first he had heard of it.
“Really? Nobody told me. Maybe I’ve been replaced” he said to The Hollywood Reporter. When asked if he would be open to making another film in the franchise, he replied he was sceptical as to whether he would have the time.
“It took 35 years to make the second one, so by that time I’ll be 105” he said. “I know those odds are not good. I really, really enjoyed making this one, and (Warner Bros.) didn’t even really want to do it. We did it the same way I did the first one, with the actors doing improv. It was beautiful to see some of the old cast and have Jenna. But it’s like trying to re-create the Wednesday dance scene. I love the characters, but I don’t necessarily see it”.
Tim Burton and Jenna Ortega are currently promoting another of their collaborations, Wednesday season two, which comes to Netflix in two parts, the first dropping on August 6 and the second part on September 3. Click here to see who Lady Gaga will be playing in the new season.
