Last month, the indie giants released ‘Lucky Dimes’, which marked their first new original material in nine years.
It came after they teased the end of their hiatus the week prior, sharing a montage of their career soundtracked by their breakthrough hit ‘Sweet Disposition’ and captioned: “Did you miss us?”
Now, they’ve followed it up with the dancefloor-ready ‘Giving Up Air’. The deeply cathartic, synth-driven track explores grief, with frontman Dougy Mandagi explaining: “‘Giving Up Air’ is a very important song for me about a life-changing moment and the unimaginable pain of losing a loved one in tragic circumstances – from the initial shock to sorrow and then anger, and finding glimmers of hope somewhere in between.
“Some of you may recognise it. It was written for my solo project Bloodmoon but the boys and I started working on it as The Temper Trap and it felt magical, like it had found its true home.”

The Temper Trap are best known for their aforementioned song ‘Sweet Deposition’, which was shared in 2008 as part of their debut album ‘Conditions’, and has long been considered an indie anthem.
Upon its release, it reached the Top 10 in charts in the UK, Ireland, and Belgium, and to date has accrued over 700,000,000 streams on Spotify.
As well as being extensively covered, the track’s popularity extended to TV and film, and cemented its place in pop culture after being used on the 500 Days of Summer soundtrack. Last year marked the 15th anniversary of the song, and in celebration, the band shared an acoustic rendition of the iconic hit and announced a limited edition vinyl reissue.
The band’s track ‘Love Lost’ was also sampled by the late rapper Mac Miller on his 2011 mixtape ‘I Love Life, Thank You’, with the track going on to appear on a posthumous re-release of the LP in 2022.
More recently, it emerged earlier this year that Taylor Swift once asked the band to handwrite the lyrics to the hit 2008 song for Harry Styles‘ birthday when the pair were in a relationship.
