The Rolling Stones announce reissue of classic 1976 album ‘Black And Blue’

The Rolling Stones have announced a new reissue of their classic 1976 album ‘Black And Blue’.

The record was originally released in April 1976, and marked the 13th full-length effort from the legendary band. It was also the first following the departure of former guitarist Mick Taylor, who was eventually replaced by Ronnie Wood.

Today (Wednesday September 24), the Stones have announced a new Super Deluxe Box Set, which will arrive on November 14 via Universal.

Arriving as a 5LP vinyl box set and a 4CD box set, both editions come alongside a Blu-ray disc, a 100-page hardback book and a replica tour poster. The vinyl edition is pressed on exclusive black and blue marbled vinyl, alongside streamlined two-disc and one-disc formats on both vinyl and CD. There will be a limited edition 1LP zoetrope vinyl on offer too.

The recording sessions served as auditions following Taylor’s exit – meaning that contributions come from the likes of guitar greats Harvey Mandel, Wayne Perkins, Jeff Beck and Robert A. Johnson.

Wood joined Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts and Bill Wyman as a bona fide Rolling Stone, appearing on three tracks and later joining as a full-time member. He signed up for their US tour and has been in the line-up for five decades.

The new box set also includes a brand new interview, where Wood reflects on joining the band in 1976: “Right then, this is where I’m meant to be.”

The album was the second to be self-produced, credited to ‘The Glimmer Twins’ (a pseudonym used by Jagger and Richards), and included songs like ‘Hot Stuff’, ‘Hand Of Fate’, ‘Fool To Cry’, ‘Melody’ and ‘Memory Motel’.

Upon the release of the original LP, the album topped the charts in the US and stayed there for four consecutive weeks.

Unreleased recordings on the new box set include the Jagger/Richards composition ‘I Love Ladies’, plus a high-energy take on Shirley & Company’s ‘Shame, Shame, Shame’. Check out the latter below, and check back tomorrow (September 25) for a new music video directed by Camille Boumans.

Four instrumental jams from the band are included – lifted from the 1975 sessions featuring the guest guitarists – as is a full live concert recording from the band’s celebrated six-night residency at London’s Earls Court Exhibition Centre, and a previously unreleased TV broadcast of the Stones’ 1976 show at Les Abattoirs in Paris.

The 100-page hardback book features a brand new essay by Stones expert Paul Sexton, along with exclusive photographs from the album sessions and tour, and a replica poster from the 1976 Paris concert.

The new re-release of ‘Black And Blue’ is announced just days after Andrew Watt confirmed that he’s reunited with The Rolling Stones on an upcoming album.

The producer teamed up with the group on their Grammy-winning 24th studio album ‘Hackney Diamonds’ in 2023, and is also recognised for his work with Elton John, Lady Gaga and Ed Sheeran.

“I’ve said it before, but it’s like working for Batman,” he said. “I can say we did some recording together, but that’s all I can say.”

That update arrived shortly after Keith Richards’ son Marlon confirmed that the band had been working on a new album too, describing it as being “nearly done”.

The latter also said that he thought the band were “planning a tour of Europe”, although nothing has been officially confirmed at the time of writing.

The members toured US stadiums last year, and reports came out earlier this year that the Stones had abandoned plans to go on tour in the UK and Europe because of scheduling issues. The Stones last played the UK in 2022, when two huge BST Hyde Park gigs followed a stadium show at Liverpool’s Anfield.
