The Outer Worlds 2 is out next week and, according to critics, the long-awaited sequel is a modern classic that’ll appeal to Fallout fans.
The Outer Worlds 2 is the follow-up to the 2019 action role-playing game The Outer Worlds. Set in an alternative future and taking place on the wealthy, isolated space colony Arcadia, developers Obsidian have teased “a lawless new frontier where your choices cut deeper, the stakes hit harder, and the corporations somehow got even worse. Bigger choices, weirder science, stranger weapons, and even worse decisions.”
“Arcadia isn’t just bigger. It’s meaner, messier, and more reactive than ever. The only thing standing between it and total collapse? You,” the announcement continued, with players taking on the role of an Earth Directorate agent investigating rifts in the fabric of space and time that have cut the colonies off from Earth entirely. At the same time, there’s tensions between the different factions controlling Arcadia that you quickly get caught up in.

The Outer Worlds 2 is out October 29 for Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5 and PC. It will also be a Day One release for Xbox Game Pass.
According to a number of reviews, The Outer Worlds 2 is a brilliant sequel to the beloved original. The game currently has a “generally favourable” review score of 84 per cent on aggregate site Metacritic.
“While the occasional technical hiccup is disappointing and the lack of a New Game+ mode is a bummer, The Outer Worlds 2 still provides an excellent action-RPG experience that will greatly appeal to Fallout fans and those who enjoyed the original game. The Outer Worlds 2 is yet another great RPG from Obsidian and is a brilliant way to cap off what has been an incredibly impressive year for the studio,” wrote GameRant in their review.

“The sluggish first act and lack of enemy variety make it a bit of a slog at certain times, but once its story of political intrigue kicks in and the new flaws and perks system gets its claws in you, it can be quite hard to put down. All these improvements put The Outer Worlds 2 that much closer to being the Fallout: New Vegas successor we hoped this series would be, and that’s worth getting excited about,” said IGN while Eurogamer said: “At its worst, this is a sequel that slips into the same comfort food zone as the original – inoffensive, breezy, but also not necessarily all that memorable. When the worst on offer is ‘pretty good and unobjectionable’, that seems like a win of sorts all the same.”
The Outer Worlds 2 is one of several new games coming to Xbox Game Pass this month following a controversial price hike.
Meanwhile, Fallout boss Todd Howard has hinted that the much-requested Fallout: New Vegas remaster is currently in the works after actor Danny Trejo publicly demanded an updated version of the 2010 game.
