Nintendo has confirmed it will be creating its own cinematic universe following the success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
During a recent financial meeting, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa said the tech giant was “building a framework” for future movie adaptations and wanted a “consistent release” of blockbusters. Alongside the already-released Super Mario Bros. Movie, Nintendo has confirmed the sequel Super Mario Galaxy Movie will launch April 3, 2026. Production on a live-action The Legend Of Zelda film also starts this week in New Zealand ahead of a 2027 release.
However, according to Furukawa’s presentation, at least two more unannounced film projects are currently in development with Nintendo wanting to do more beyond that.
Nintendo says they are preparing for ongoing movie releases in the future.

Elsewhere in the presentation, Nintendo confirmed it was going to be “deeply involved” in all its movie adaptations, from planning and development through to production. “For The Super Mario Bros. Movie and the upcoming The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, our own Shigeru Miyamoto has served as a co-producer alongside Mr Chris Meledandri of Illumination,” he explained. “For the live-action movie of The Legend Of Zelda, Shigeru Miyamoto is co-producing with Mr Avi Arad of Arad Productions Inc, and has been closely involved since the initial planning stages.”
There are already rumours a Donkey Kong movie could be possible after a copyright filing revealed an “untitled DK project” was in the works.“Give us Ice Climbers you cowards,” wrote one fan. “Nintendo should do a collab with Studio Ghibli for Zelda,” said another. “The next Smash Bros. shall be in cinemas,” added a third.
Earlier this year, Furukawa said Nintendo wanted to use more of its characters in TV and film adaptations as part of its strategy to “expand the number of people who have access to Nintendo IP”.

“We have been working on initiatives beyond our dedicated video game platforms for several years. Visual content is one such area,” he explained. Nintendo set up an in-house animation studio, Nintendo Pictures, in 2022 and earlier this year, they shared a new Pikmin short Close To You that took the internet by storm.
It’s not just movies Nintendo is branching out into either. Earlier this month, they confirmed the soundtrack to Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild was finally getting a physical release outside of Japan with more potentially on the way. “This is a little bit about us trying to gauge and understand what is the demand for physical soundtracks,” said a spokesperson. Furukawa had previously teased the possibility of official orchestral tours, following the success of the Nintendo Music app which launched last October.
In other news, Grand Theft Auto fans have been tricked by a viral social media post that claimed a movie adaptation was in the works.
