The new Xbox is rumoured to cost at least $1000

The latest rumours about the next-gen Xbox console say the successor to the Series X/S will cost at least $1000.

The Xbox Series X/S originally launched in 2020 and the latest console from Microsoft is expected to release at some point in 2027. According to tech insider KeplerL2, the next-gen Xbox will set you back $1200 due to the cost of silicon and the price of implementing more memory and the necessary cooling components.

Another leak from Windows Central suggests the new Xbox will run Windows, meaning gamers will be able to play PC games via Steam and other platforms using the console. According to insiders, the recently-released ROG Xbox Ally (a collaboration with computer hardware company ASUS) was prioritised above a pure handheld Xbox so Microsoft could get feedback about a PC/console hybrid.

It’s also speculated that the new console won’t lock online multiplayer behind a paywall and will be fully backwards compatible. “In theory, the next Xbox will have more games, more content, than any other video game device in history, combining games locked to the Xbox console ecosystem, while sporting full open access to every PC storefront and launcher on earth,” wrote Windows Central’s Jez Corden.

While these rumours are still unconfirmed, it does back up what Xbox boss Sarah Bond teased last week, following the launch of the ROG Ally. “The next-gen console is going to be a very premium, very high-end curated experience,” Bond explained in an interview with Mashable. “You’re starting to see some of the thinking we have in this handheld but I don’t want to give it all away.”

Back in June, Bond said the next-gen console would “deliver the next generation of graphics innovation [and] unlock a deeper level of visual quality, immersive gameplay and player experiences enhanced with the power of AI.” She also promised it would be “fully compatible” with users’ existing Xbox game library.

Earlier this month, a Microsoft spokesperson hit back at rumours they would be scrapping future Xbox consoles to become a digital-only company, following online rumours. “We are actively investing in our future first-party consoles and devices designed, engineered and built by Xbox,” said Microsoft.
