When EA teased in June that it was bringing back its popular college basketball franchise, some wondered when they might actually get something to play. As it turns out, it’s not going to be anytime soon, which is not much of a surprise.
EA Sports executive Sean O’Brien told USA Today that EA is “up for the challenge” of building a new college basketball game. Currently, the company is “in the process of trying to figure out how that could come together.”
While it’s still very early days, O’Brien went on to say that the hope is for the new game to include every D1 men’s and women’s basketball team, and he admitted getting this done is a “daunting task.”
O’Brien said the success of re-launching the college football series helped pave the way for bringing back college basketball. “We felt that we really captured lightning in a bottle with college football. I think we would love to try to do the same for college basketball,” O’Brien said.
Matt Brown of Extra Points previously reported that a possible new college basketball game from EA could arrive with the 2028-209 season, but no official announcements have been made.
In addition to a new game from EA, 2K Sports has said it plans to revive its own college basketball series–that game is likely only early in development as well.
Looking back at EA’s college football game, the company first teased a project in 2021, but the game wasn’t released until July 2024. It was an enormous success, generating more than $1 billion for EA and ranking as the No. 2 best-selling game in the US for 2024.
EA hasn’t released a college basketball game was NCAA Basketball 10 in 2009. As for 2K’s series, the company hasn’t put out a new college basketball game since 2007’s College Hoops 2K8.
