Work had begun on the fourth season of the series but was interrupted by the Hollywood strikes in 2023. After a delay, Lucasfilm opted instead to prioritise a feature film in the Mandalorian franchise, and The Mandalorian And Grogu will now be the first Star Wars film since 2019’s The Rise Of Skywalker.

As shown in the trailer, Sigourney Weaver will join the cast, playing Ward, a colonel and leader of the New Republic’s Adelphi Rangers who had previously served with the Rebel Alliance. Jeremy Allen White also joins as Rotta the Hutt, son of Jabba.

Jon Favreau will direct the film, having also served as creator and showrunner of the Disney+ series, and he has written the new film alongside Dave Filoni, chief creative officer of Lucasfilm.

The Mandalorian And Grogu’s synopsis states: “The evil Empire has fallen, and Imperial warlords remain scattered throughout the galaxy. As the fledgling New Republic works to protect everything the Rebellion fought for, they have enlisted the help of legendary Mandalorian bounty hunter Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and his young apprentice Grogu.”

Favreau has said: “I have loved telling stories set in the rich world that George Lucas created. The prospect of bringing the Mandalorian and his apprentice Grogu to the big screen is extremely exciting.”

The Mandalorian & Grogu will be the first of several new Star Wars film releases, with a new trilogy in the works from X-Men: Dark Phoenix director Simon Kinberg.

The first look at Star Wars: Starfighter also landed last week, with Ryan Gosling in the lead role. Set five years after The Rise Of Skywalker, it will be directed by Deadpool & Wolverine’s Shawn Levy and will be released in cinemas on May 28, 2027.
