The director of The Conjuring: Last Rites has confirmed the film will be the last in the series, despite breaking franchise records.
Released in September, the horror is the ninth movie in the Conjuring Universe, which also spawned The Nun and Annabelle spin-offs. The story brought to an end the paranormal investigations of lead characters Ed and Lorraine Warren (Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga), however the film’s success has led to fans speculating more films may be on the horizon.
To date, The Conjuring: Last Rites has grossed $482 million worldwide at the box office, the highest in the series, making over $100million more than the previous record holder, 2018’s The Nun. Despite this, the filmmaker behind the movie insists this is the last chapter.
In an interview with ComicBook.com, director Michael Chaves asserted: “It is done. This is the final chapter … that’s why we called it Last Rites. It’s the last one. There’s no other Conjuring movies. It is absolutely the end.”
Despite that promise, critics have noticed the potential for more movies. In NME’s three-star review, Jordan Bassett wrote: “Inevitably, the coffin lid is left open for a future spin-off: expect The Conjuring to rise again.
Of the film overall, he said: “For at least half of its runtime, Last Rites is as handsome, solidly made and jumpy as the original. It’s never actually scary but Chaves (who took the main series’ reins from original director and franchise creator James Wan after 2016’s The Conjuring 2) has been generous with the popcorn-flinging set pieces that make these movies perfect date-night fodder.”

Earlier in the year, a promotional popcorn bucket for the film made headlines. Shaped like haunted doll Annabelle, the position of the popcorn within the bucket led fans online to point out that it gave the appearance of “eating out her ass.”
