The best-reviewed game of 2025 might not be getting a sequel

Hades 2 is currently the best-reviewed game of 2025 but according to developers, it might not be getting a sequel.

The original Hades was officially released in 2020 after a couple of years in Early Access. It went on to sell more than a million copies and was praised by fans and critics alike. A sequel launched in Early Access last year ahead of a full launch last week.

Hades 2 is the first time developers Supergiant Games has ever made a sequel and the game, according to the official description, “builds on the best aspects of the original god-like rogue-like dungeon crawler in an all-new, action-packed, endlessly replayable experience rooted in the Underworld of Greek myth and its deep connections to the dawn of witchcraft”.

Following its launch, Hades 2 has become the best-reviewed game of 2025 beating out Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Hollow Knight: Silksong, Blue Prince, Split Fiction and Donkey Kong Bananza according to review aggregate site Metacritic.

However in a new interview, Supergiant studio director Amir Rao has revealed they haven’t started planning a follow-up just yet. “When we’re working on our games, we’re not talking about the next game. The culture is really about focusing on what we have and if we have a really good idea or have a really good thought, it should go into the game we’re making,” he told YouTuber Haelian (via GamesRadar+).

“What we’re doing next is just focused on [the full launch] and seeing what people are saying about it,” he continued. “Then there will be a break and we’ll process this and figure out what the future holds for us. But [Hades 3] is not preordained. It’s not something we secretly know right now or anything like that.”

Speaking about their decision to make a sequel to Hades, Supergiant wrote: “With each of our projects over the years, we’ve aimed to take on a new challenge that stretched our team’s creativity and taught us more about how to make games well together. One such challenge we’ve long considered was to try and make a sequel that could somehow re-capture the sense of wonder and delight of its predecessor. Some of our all-time favorite games achieved this! Could we?”

Hades 2 is currently only available on Nintendo Switch and PC with no news of a PlayStation or Xbox version. “We haven’t ruled out bringing Hades 2 to other platforms down the line. The original Hades initially launched only on PC, Mac and Nintendo Switch and we’ve taken a similar path with the sequel,” the studio explained in the FAQ section of their website.

In other news, The Last Of Us co-creator Neil Druckmann has taken to social media to confirm news about the franchise is coming, with many fans assuming he’s talking about the long-awaited sequel.
