Sales of the Switch 2 are significantly outpacing sales of the original Switch in the US over similar periods of time. That’s according to new data from research firm Circana, which published its latest monthly sales report today, August 27.
The data shows that the Switch 2 has now exceeded 2 million units sold in the US since launch in early June. That’s 75% ahead of the pace of sales for the original Switch back in 2017.
Unsurprisingly, the Switch 2 helped propel total US gaming hardware sales in July, which surged by 21%, from $317 million in July 2024 to $384 million in July 2025. The Switch 2 was the only major console platform that posted growth in July 2025 in the US, with PS5 dollar sales dropping by 47%, Xbox Series X|S sales sliding by 69%, and original Switch spending declining by 52%.
The Switch 2 was July 2025’s best-selling console in the US and the top-performing system so far in 2025 overall. PS5 was No. 2 for July 2025 and year-to-date.
Globally, the Switch 2 sold more than 6 million units in the seven weeks after launch, exceeding Nintendo’s expectations. The company plans to sell 15 million Switch 2 consoles by the end of March 2026.
Piscatella has said the Switch 2 was always going to put up strong sales numbers at launch due to pent-up demand and how people who buy technology products at launch are not sensitive to price. The Switch 2 is more expensive than the original Switch, and this could be a “test” for the console as it goes into the holidays and Nintendo tries to sell the system to mass-market buyers who might have issues with the relatively higher price.
More details about the Switch 2 and its games lineup could be revealed soon, as reports suggest the next Nintendo Direct is coming up in mid-September.
The Switch 2 is the only major modern platform that hasn’t seen a price increase in 2025, but that could change in 2026 with a possible price hike.
