‘Super Mario Bros. Movie’ sequel title revealed in leak

It appears that the title for The Super Mario Bros. Movie sequel has been leaked by Universal.

The Mario movie was released in 2023 and was a smash at the box office, grossing more than $1.3billion. Chris Pratt voiced the plucky plumber alongside Anya Taylor-Joy as Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi and Jack Black as Bowser. However the adaptation got a mixed response from critics and long-time Mario fans.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie took loose inspiration from the hit video game series and saw plumber brothers Mario and Luigi get sucked into The Mushroom Kingdom. Mario then teamed up with Princess Peach and Donkey Kong to defeat Bowser, before returning home. A post-credit scene teased the arrival of Yoshi. A sequel was confirmed on Mario Day 2024 and is due to hit cinemas April 3, 2026.

Now, it seems Universal has accidentally revealed that the sequel will be called Super Mario Galaxy.

According to reports, the studio recently registered two website domains (SuperMarioGalaxy-LaPelicula.com, SuperMarioGalaxy-lefilm.com) which briefly redirected people back to the main Universal website. After fans found the sites, they were shut down.

Super Mario Galaxy was a 2007 3D platform game released on the Nintendo Wii. The fan-favourite title sees Mario heading into space to rescue Princess Peach from Bowser with the help of Rosalina and the star-shaped Luma. A direct sequel followed in 2010. It remains one of the most popular Mario games and news of a film adaptation has fans very excited.

“I’m so stoked. My fave Mario game is getting a movie, I’m so fucking happy,” wrote one fan. “If they take some sauce from Galaxy maybe the movie will be good this time,” added another. “Mario Galaxy is one of the more story rich Mario games, it’d make for a hell of a movie,” said a third.

Back in July, a now-deleted TikTok video revealed a new range of Old Spice fragrances with The Super Mario Galaxy Movie branding, but fans dismissed these as knock-offs.

Fans won’t have to wait long for the leak to be confirmed or debunked. Nintendo are set to host an hour-long Direct presentation later today (September 12), one day before the 40th anniversary of Super Mario Bros. You can watch it live here from 2pm BST.

Earlier this year, another leak from a Universal press release suggested the follow-up to The Super Mario Bros. Movie would be called Super Mario World.
