Montgomery played Billy Hargrove in season two and season three as both a secondary character and main villain. He also returned briefly in season four through flashbacks and visions.

But since his breakthrough role on the Netflix sci-fi series, he has only appeared in a few other projects, including Baz Luhrmann’s Oscar-nominated Elvis Presley biopic, Elvis, and Dan Kay’s new psychological thriller, Spider & Jessie.

Speaking in a new interview with The Australian, he explained his retreat from the spotlight, saying he thinks “things have changed”.

“Traditional Hollywood stars existed because there was mystery. Social media has done away with that. That’s a large part of why I dropped off the map for the last five years,” he continued.

“I’m not trying to compete with anyone else, I’m living my truth – and hopefully being able to pay the rent while I’m doing it.”

Stranger Things will come to a close this year with its fifth season, with the first four episodes to debut on November 26, followed by three episodes on December 25, and the series finale on December 31.

Little is known about what the writers have in store for the final instalment, although one of the co-creators has dismissed rumours that each episode of the upcoming chapter will be movie-length.

The official synopsis reads: “The fall of 1987. Hawkins is scarred by the opening of the Rifts, and our heroes are united by a single goal: find and kill Vecna. But he has vanished – his whereabouts and plans unknown. Complicating their mission, the government has placed the town under military quarantine and intensified its hunt for Eleven, forcing her back into hiding.

“As the anniversary of Will’s disappearance approaches, so does a heavy, familiar dread. The final battle is looming – and with it, a darkness more powerful and more deadly than anything they’ve faced before. To end this nightmare, they’ll need everyone – the full party – standing together, one last time.”

Earlier this year, Ross Duffer promised an “emotional, thrilling” season, saying: “The goal is to hit hard”. Afterwards, cast member Caleb McLoughlin talked about how he felt finishing the series, saying: “’I was like, ‘I’m not going to cry. I’m not going to cry,’ and then ended up just bawling, man.”

Elsewhere, plans are under way to develop a spin-off inspired by Twin Peaks, according to star Finn Wolfhard.
