Stranger Things fans have voiced their concern about beloved character Steve being killed off in the final season.
The trailer for Stranger Things 5 has been released, with the cast preparing for one final showdown with the evil Vecna. However, some fans have noticed that Steve, played by Joe Keery, only makes a brief appearance in the clips. This has led some to believe the character may be killed off.
Creators The Duffer Brothers have generally been hesitant to kill off beloved characters, to the point where star Millie Bobby Brown described them as “sensitive Sallies” for not being more like Game Of Thrones.
In a 2022 podcast interview (via Indiewire), Matt Duffer said: “Believe us, we’ve explored all of it, all options in the writing room. We’re not Game of Thrones. This is Hawkins. It’s not Westeros.” Expanding on that, he said the show sits with character deaths for longer, using the season one death of Barb as an example.
“When Barb dies, it’s two seasons of grappling with that,” he said. “So imagine, you know, Mike dying, and it’s, like, is that something that we’re interested in exploring or not interested in exploring?”
Despite this, theories have circulated on the internet that Steve may meet his end this coming season. “Why does Steve appear for barely 5 seconds in the new Stranger Things trailer??? Hellooooo??????” said one user on X (formerly Twitter). “Don’t you dare kill him, you’ve been warned, Netflix.”

Another added: “Is there a live betting pool somewhere for who is going to die in Stranger Things? My money is on either Eleven or Steve fr”.

One fan responded to the trailer by threatening: “I’m suing @netflix if they even lay a finger on Steve.”

Meanwhile, another observer broke down why they believe he would be for the chop. “This just confirmed for me that Steve The Hair is definitely dying sacrificing himself” they wrote, “because he’s the only character that is ‘expendable’ regarding the fact he’s not coupled with anyone and he’s a fan favourite that is set up for a big ending in a big finale.”
