Following months of speculation, Ryan Gosling was unveiled to star in the lead role earlier this year during the annual Star Wars Celebration event in Tokyo. Set five years after 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker (2019), the film went into production last month.
A press release from the official Star Wars website, described it as being “an all-new standalone adventure” and “an entirely original story set in a period of time never before explored in Star Wars.” The film is set to be released in cinemas on May 28, 2027.
Now, Levy has shared the first shot from the film featuring Gosling and co-star Flynn Gray, which you can view below.
“Somewhere in the Mediterranean Sea #Starfighter,” Levy captioned the image.
It comes after The Inbetweeners star Simon Bird recently said that he was joining the cast for the new movie alongside the already confirmed Mia Goth, Matt Smith, Aaron Pierre and Amy Adams.

In a previous statement, Levy said: “I feel a profound sense of excitement and honour as we begin production on Star Wars: Starfighter. From the day (producer) Kathy Kennedy called me up, inviting me to develop an original adventure in this incredible Star Wars galaxy, this experience has been a dream come true, creatively and personally.
“Star Wars shaped my sense of what story can do, how characters and cinematic moments can live with us forever. To join this storytelling galaxy with such brilliant collaborators onscreen and off, is the thrill of a lifetime.”
Levy’s previous Disney film – Marvel Studios’ Deadpool & Wolverine – became the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time, grossing $1.33billion (£95million) worldwide.
The next film in the Star Wars universe will be The Mandalorian and Grogu, currently set for release on May 22, 2026.
