Sophie Turner to play Lara Croft in new ‘Tomb Raider’ adaptation

Sophie Turner has been announced as the new Lara Croft in Amazon Prime Video’s upcoming Tomb Raider adaptation.

Last year, Amazon Prime Video confirmed it was working alongside video game studio Crystal Dynamics on a new series inspired by the iconic Tomb Raider games.

Phoebe Waller-Bridge was announced as the writer and creator of the adaptation and now we know that Game Of Thrones star Turner will be playing Lara Croft.

“I’m so excited to announce the formidable Sophie Turner as our Lara alongside this phenomenal creative team,” said Waller-Bridge in a statement. “It’s not very often you get to make a show of this scale with a character you grew up loving. Everyone on board is wildly passionate about Lara and are all as outrageous, brave, and hilarious as she is. Get your artifacts out… Croft is coming…”

“I am thrilled beyond measure to be playing Lara Croft,” added Turner. “She’s such an iconic character, who means so much to so many – and I am giving everything I’ve got. They’re massive shoes to fill, following in the steps of Angelina (Jolie) and Alicia (Vikander) with their powerhouse performances, but with Phoebe at the helm, we (and Lara) are all in very safe hands. I can’t wait for you all to see what we have cooking.”

Filming for the Prime Video Tomb Raider series will start January 19, 2026. A release date has yet to be confirmed. According to Prime Video boss Vernon Sanders, the series will “honour the beloved Tomb Raider legacy while delivering fresh adventures to fans worldwide.”

Turner has been rumoured to take on the role of Lara Croft since November last year.

Amazon Games are also working on a new Tomb Raider video game. The “single-player, narrative-driven adventure” project was originally announced back in 2022 and last year, Amazon Games boss Christoph Hartmann confirmed things were going well.

“Doing a new Tomb Raider, the bar is so high. The longer you go, the expectation goes higher, so it’s a huge, huge task, but things are progressing,” he explained. “I mean, there’s some really great ideas here. Obviously, we’re not going to share any with you even if we would love to, but things are going well, things are moving forward.”

In other news, an “authentic” Call Of Duty movie adaptation is in the works. The live-action feature film is reportedly aiming “to thrill its massive global fan base by delivering on the hallmarks of what fans love about the iconic series” but will also “expand the franchise to entirely new audiences.”
