Some ‘Fortnite’ players have no idea who Gorillaz are

Gorillaz are set to be announced as the next headliners of Fortnite Festival but some players have no idea who the band are.

Fortnite Festival is a rhythm-based spin-off from the battle royale, with players able to play along to a massive library of hit songs. Since the game launched at the end of 2023, it’s hosted collaborations with Sabrina Carpenter, Lady Gaga, The Weeknd and more.

Bruno Mars is currently the headline act of Fortnite Festival’s ninth season, though his arrival was met with backlash from fans who wanted more bands in the game. According to a series of leaks, it looks like the headline act of Fortnite Festival season 10 will be Gorillaz.

However, some players have no idea who the virtual band are. “Ok can someone fill me in pls. Cause I actually don’t know who this is?” one fan wrote on Instagram. “Same” replied another.

Others were quick to educate Fortnite players on the “greatest band of all time”, though.  “For the people who don’t know who they are, they are a late ‘90s band who have hella good songs. They also look sick so yeah, I’m excited,” wrote one fan on X.

“This genuinely might be one of the greatest Fortnite Festival seasons of all time,” added another.

Season 10 is set to kick off on August 26 and, according to the leaks, will include skins for all four members of Gorillaz while a number of their songs will be added as Jam Tracks.

This isn’t the first time Damon Albarn’s been met with a young, bemused audience, though. Back in 2024, Blur performed on the Coachella mainstage before Tyler, The Creator, but the crowd didn’t seem that into the Britpop legends’ career-spanning set. “You’re never seeing us again, so you might as well fucking sing it. Know what I’m saying,” Albarn said during the first weekend.

Guitarist Graham Coxon went on to speak about the incident in an interview with GQ. “I like making albums. I’m perfectly happy on stage, but sometimes, like at Coachella or something, it’s taken you 14 hours to get there, and then you’re playing to people who don’t give a shit. They’re looking at you like ‘who’s this old git?’.”

Gorillaz are currently celebrating their 25th anniversary. As well as the interactive House Of Kong exhibition that’s currently open in London, the band will play a series of special gigs at the Copper Box Arena. Across four nights, Gorillaz will play their first three albums in full while the final gig is billed as a “mystery” show. Albarn has teased that new music “might” be aired during the show. Earlier this year, he said a new Gorillaz album would be released in 2025 but so far, nothing has been announced.
