While the fate of all other DCEU (and Warner Bros in general) projects seems very much in doubt, it seems that Joker 2 is still moving steadily ahead. On the heels of the recent announcement that the sequel to the unexpectedly successful and critically acclaimed Joker will be in theaters on October 4, 2024, a Joker 2 teaser has just been released. Todd Phillips released a brief, 17-second video on his Instagram account, and well, it certainly does raise some interesting expectations for the upcoming film. Check it out:
The Joker 2 teaser opens on a blood-red screen, in which the word “PHOENIX” is printed in faded black letters. That is quickly replaced by a silhouette of a man seemingly caught mid-dance step; he is slowly moving, making the whole thing have the look of a shadow-puppet performance. The man has the distinctive slicked-back hair of Joaquin Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck from the first movie and is clenching a cigarette in his mouth, so there is no doubt as to what we are seeing here. The music playing over the video is a snippet of Fred Astaire’s rendition of the Irving Berlin classic “Cheek to Cheek,” which is also used as the caption of the post.
The next panel of the Joker 2 teaser repeats the first, except now it reads GAGA, finally confirming that Academy Award-winning singer and actress Lady Gaga will be appearing in the film. We can assume the following silhouette is her character; she is wearing a long dress and stiletto heels and has her hair in a high bun. Tellingly, the Joker 2 teaser has a tiny but distinct heart mark on the silhouette’s face, which is definitely something associated with a certain longtime companion of the Joker in Batman mythos.
Finally, the Joker 2 teaser shows us the silhouettes of Joaquin Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck and Lady Gaga’s mysterious character dancing together. The red heart is still distinctively visible on Gaga’s face, while Phoenix now has a red cutout of the Pierrot-style makeup he wore in the first movie. The video quickly flashes to the words “Folie à deux,” with the sound of Joaquin Phoenix’s distinct, mirthless laugh over it. Then the premiere date of 10.04.2024. Fin.
The Joker 2 teaser at least lets us know that Lady Gaga will be in the film (which is officially titled Joker: Folie a Deux), though little more than that. Let’s be real: the Joker 2 teaser clearly is implying and wants us to think Lady Gaga will be playing Harley Quinn. That would make a lot of sense, given the French subtitle, the typical representation of the relationship between the Joker and the former Doctor Harleen Quinzel, and well, basically everything. The teaser also gives some more weight to the rumors that Joker 2 will be, if not a full musical, filled with some musical interludes over some of the old ultraviolence. After all, why hire Lady Gaga if you’re not going to get a song out of it?
