The revival of Scrubs is experiencing issues, as the sitcom has reportedly lost one of its showrunners.
The beloved series was announced as being rebooted last year, with Zach Braff returning to the cast in May. The series will also bring back original stars Donald Faison, Sarah Chalke, Judy Reyes and John C. McGinley as it continues to follow the misadventures of doctors and nurses at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Production had begun on the series, but Deadline has reported that showrunner Tim Hobert has left his role, with the article citing his departure as due to “creative differences”. The comedy’s other showrunner, Assem Batra, will now reportedly take charge of production solo. The series is reportedly due to film the third episode in the coming days. Zach Braff is said to have directed the opening episode.
Originally running from 2001-2010, the show starred Braff as John Dorian (aka J.D), an idealistic new medical intern who spends each episode navigating life and love. At its peak, the comedy had an audience of over 15million viewers and remains beloved by fans to this day. Braff and Faison launched the podcast Fake Doctors, Real Friends in 2020, in which the actors re-watch episodes and give behind-the-scenes anecdotes.
Despite his enthusiasm to return, Zach Braff did admit last year that he felt “exhausted” by the time Scrubs came to a close. “We were starting to repeat jokes. Everyone’s pretty fried,” he revealed on the Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum podcast. “We would do insane hours that people don’t even do anymore. We didn’t really have much of a life outside of it. So we were just kind of fried”.
In March, Braff joined The Shins, Laufey, and more on stage to cover Tom Petty’s ‘Free Fallin’ at an anniversary concert for his 2004 film Garden State.
