Robert De Niro and Jane Fonda lead tributes to “limitlessly creative” Diane Keaton: “One of the very best to ever do it”

Robert De Niro and Jane Fonda have led the tributes to the Hollywood legend Diane Keaton, who has died at the age of 79.

The Oscar-winning actor, remembered for Annie Hall, The Godfather, Reds, Father Of The Bride, and Something’s Gotta Give, passed away in California on Saturday (October 11), as confirmed to People. No details of her cause of death have been provided.

Many of Keaton’s friends and colleagues have shared their tributes and reactions on social media since the news broke, including De Niro, who worked with her on The Godfather Part II, Marvin’s Room and The Big Wedding.

“I am very sad to hear of Diane’s passing,” he said in a statement. “I was very fond of her, and the news of her leaving us has taken me totally by surprise. I was not expecting her to leave us. She will be missed. May she rest in peace.”

Fonda co-starred with Keaton in 2018’s Book Club and its 2023 sequel, and took to Instagram to say: “It’s hard to believe…or accept…that Diane has passed. She was always a spark of life and light, constantly giggling at her own foibles, being limitlessly creative…in her acting, her wardrobe, her books, her friends, her homes, her library, her world view. Unique is what she was.

“And, though she didn’t know it or wouldn’t admit it, man she was a fine actress!”

Their Book Club co-star Mary Steenburgen told Deadline: “Diane was magic. There was no one, nor will there ever be, anyone like her. I loved her and felt blessed to be her friend. My love to her family. What a wonder she was!!!”

Leonardo DiCaprio also starred in Marvin’s Room with Keaton, and he wrote on his Instagram Stories: “Diane Keaton was one of a kind. Brilliant, funny, and unapologetically herself. A legend, an icon, and a truly kind human being. I had the honor of working with her at 18. She will be deeply missed.”

Others to pay tribute include her Father Of The Bride co-stars Steve Martin and Kimberly Williams-Paisley, her The First Wives Club co-stars Goldie Hawn and Bette Midler, as well as Michael Douglas, Ben Stiller, Andy Garcia, Mandy Moore, Ellen DeGeneres, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Belinda Carlisle, whose ‘Heaven Is A Place On Earth’ video was directed by Keaton.

Known as a master of both comedy and drama, Keaton won an Oscar for her portrayal of the title character in Annie Hall (1977), one of eight films she made with Woody Allen. She was nominated three more times, for Reds (1981), Marvin’s Room (1996) and Something’s Gotta Give (2003).

She is survived by her adopted daughter Dexter and son Duke.
