Robert De Niro a “broken old man”, says Donald Trump’s deputy chief of staff

Donald Trump’s deputy chief of staff, Stephen Miller, has hit out at Robert De Niro, after the actor labelled him a “Nazi”.

The feud ignited when De Niro appeared on MSNBC on Sunday (October 19), arguing that he believes Trump will attempt to cling to power when his second and final term in office ends. “He’s set it up with, I guess he’s the Goebbels of the Cabinet, Stephen Miller,” he said, referencing Joseph Goebbels, Adolf Hitler’s propaganda minister in Nazi Germany.

He continued: “He’s a Nazi, yes he is, and he’s Jewish. He should be ashamed of himself.” The Goodfellas star has been a long-time critic of the American president and his administration.

Miller was asked about the comments on Fox show Hannity yesterday (October 22), although instead of directly disputing the accusations he insulted the career of the Oscar-winning actor. He said: “Robert De Niro is a sad, bitter, broken old man who is mostly enraged because he has not made a movie worth watching in at least 30 years.”

Miller continued: “This man has been degrading himself on camera with one horrific film after another for my entire adult life and he is not taken seriously by anybody. Not by his family, not by his friends, not by his community. He is a shell of a man and everyone disregards everything he says.”

In the period mentioned by Miller, De Niro has made many films that were critically and financially successful. The Daily Beast also noted that, in the past, the politician cited the actor’s 1995 drama Casino as his favourite film of all time.

Following the No Kings protests across America this past weekend, Robert De Niro urged Americans to “keep fighting” Donald Trump. “There’s no other way to face a bully” he remarked. “You have to face him and fight it out.”
