Road House director Doug Liman is attempting to make his own sequel to the film, rivalling Amazon MGM’s planned follow-up, after a bitter feud over the movie.
Liman, known for the films The Bourne Identity and Mrs & Mrs Smith, directed the 2024 action movie, starring Jake Gyllenhaal as a former UFC fighter who takes a job as a bouncer at a Florida bar. It is a remake of the beloved 1989 film starring Patrick Swayze.
Upon its release, the filmmaker took issue with studio Amazon MGM choosing to premiere the film on its Prime Video service, bypassing cinemas altogether.
In an open letter in January of last year, Liman said he would not be attending the premiere, saying: “Contrary to their public statements, Amazon has no interest in supporting cinemas. Amazon will exclusively stream Road House on Amazon’s Prime.”
He continued: “Amazon asked me and the film community to trust them and their public statements about supporting cinemas, and then they turned around and are using Road House to sell plumbing fixtures.”
Liman would eventually relent and attend the premiere, however he is not involved in Amazon’s planned sequel. Instead, Deadline reports that he has “quietly” acquired the rights to Road House: Dylan, a sequel to the 1989 movie by that film’s screenwriter, R. Lance Hill. Should Hill win an ongoing lawsuit with Amazon over ownership of the franchise, the film could go ahead with Liman at the helm.

As for Amazon MGM’s own sequel, Road House 2 is currently in production, having recently lost director Guy Ritchie due to creative differences.
Last year, star Gyllenhaal discussed his brutal training regime for Road House, saying that he couldn’t even “eat a chip” during filming for fear of putting himself off track.
