‘Resident Evil’ director is expecting gamers to hate new movie

Horror director Zach Cregger is currently working on a big screen adaptation of Resident Evil but has warned gamers they might hate it.

At the start of the year it was announced that Barbarian creator Zach Cregger was working on a “faithful” Resident Evil reboot film that would take the franchise back to its horror roots.

The first Resident Evil movie was released in 2002 and starred Milla Jovovich as Alice. Borrowing elements from the 1996 original game and its 1998 sequel, she had to work with a group of soldiers to contain an outbreak of the T-Virus. A number of sequels followed that took more creative liberties with the lore of the survival horror franchise, before the rebooted Resident Evil: Welcome To Racoon City was released in 2021. Despite taking influence from the first two games, it was met with mixed reviews and now Cregger is currently working on another reboot.

“I am a gigantic Resident Evil game fan. I’ve played them all,” he said in an interview with SFX Magazine. “I don’t know how many times I’ve just looped Resident Evil 4 again and again. I just love it. “

Despite being a fan, he admitted that he’s “definitely not trying to be completely obedient to the lore of the games,” for his movie.  “I’m trying to tell a story that just feels authentic to the experience you get when you play the games. I don’t think I’m breaking any major rules, but I also recognize that no matter what I do, people are going to come for me online.”

Responding to the news, one fan wrote: “Why even bother touching Resident Evil if you’re not gonna give us what we truly want?!”

“They never learn,” added another. “A lil disappointed to hear he will be straying from the Resident Evil lore. But after watching Barbarian I still have high hopes. If anyone can capture the feeling of the games while doing something fresh, it’s him,” said a third fan.

Last month, Resident Evil developers Capcom confirmed that the upcoming Requiem was originally going to be an online multiplayer game before it was retooled into a single-player survival game. “In the end, although we had some interesting concepts, we realised that it wasn’t what fans wanted to see or play. So we went back to the drawing board,” said director Koshi Nakanishi.

In other news, Pokémon has confirmed a livestream presentation for next week – and fans are expecting some music news after a DJ-themed teaser.
