Red Dead Redemption 2 has become the sixth best-selling video game of all time, shifting more copies than the original Pokémon games.
In a new financial update, Red Dead Redemption 2 publishers Take-Two have confirmed the western action adventure game has now sold 77million copies, making it the sixth best-selling video game of all time.
When Red Dead Redemption 2 was released in 2018, it shifted $725million worth of games in its opening weekend and has remained the best-selling game in the US based on dollar sales ever since. According to Take-Two, four million copies of the game have been sold in the past three months.
This latest update on Red Dead Redemption 2’s sales figures means it’s now overtaken the original Pokémon games. Red & Blue were released in Japan in 1996 before a global launch in 1998 while the expanded Yellow version followed a year later. However, there is no way to currently buy the original Pokémon games but fans are hoping that will change next year as the franchise celebrates its 30th anniversary.
The ten best-selling video games of all time are:
- Minecraft (350million copies sold)
- Grand Theft Auto 5 (215million)
- Wii Sports (82.9million)
- Ark: Survival Evolved (79million)
- Mario Kart 8 (77.3million)
- Red Dead Redemption 2 (77million)
- Pokemon Red, Blue & Yellow (76.1million)
- PUBG: Battlegrounds (75million)
- The Sims (70million)
- The Oregon Trail (65million)
Fans are also expecting Red Dead Redemption 2 to be ported to the Nintendo Switch 2 in the near future. According to several industry insiders, the Switch 2 version of the hit game could launch later this year.
Back in June, John Marston voice actor Rob Wiethoff teased an “exciting” announcement with many fans hoping for news on a remastered version of the original game. However, he later admitted he may have “possibly misled” fans over the news.
Earlier this year, PinkPantheress revealed she was a huge fan of Red Dead Redemption 2 but wasn’t so keen on The Legend Of Zelda series. More recently, the popstar used a cult Nintendo DS sample during her celebrated performance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Her medley of ‘Illegal’, ‘Girl Like Me’ and ‘Tonight’ used sounds from Rhythm Heaven because the rhythm game “got” PinkPantheress through her teens.
