According to a new report, Sony is working on a PlayStation handheld console to rival the Nintendo Switch 2.
The Nintendo Switch 2 has had an absolutely huge launch, becoming the fastest selling consoles of all time following its release earlier this year. Microsoft has already announced plans for a handheld Xbox console with the ROG Ally launching October 16. Now it looks like Sony are looking to return to the handheld console market.
According to the Moore’s Law Is Dead YouTube channel, a PlayStation 6 portable console is currently being developed. The device can reportedly be docked like a Nintendo Switch and will be more powerful than the standard PS5. According to the report, the device could cost around $500 and will release in late 2027. A home console version of the PlayStation 6 is also being developed.
Sony has yet to comment on the claims but the channel has previously leaked a number of PlayStation announcements early. Rumours about a new handheld PlayStation console have been circulating since 2024, when it was reported that “Project Jupiter” was in the early stages of development.
Moore’s Law Is Dead also warned viewers about “bogus” rumours about just how powerful the new PlayStation will be. “Some people need to be more self-aware about how their speculation is being spread as fact. I just want to make sure you all have the correct information.”
A handheld version of the PlayStation 6 won’t be the first time Sony has experimented with portable consoles. The Nintendo DS rival PlayStation Portable was released in 2004 and was discontinued in 2014, while the 3DS rival PlayStation Vista launched in 2011. A successor was never released due to the “popularity” of mobile gaming, said former Sony president Shuhei Yoshida. However PlayStation 5 users can buy the PlayStation Portable Remote Player which lets them stream content from their PS5.
