There’s been a lot of hype among Halo fans surrounding the long-rumored remake of the first game, Halo: Campaign Evolved. For one thing, It’s the first Halo game to arrive on PlayStation 5. However, Jaime Griesemer–a designer for Halo: Combat Evolved and the design lead on Halo 2 and Halo 3–isn’t happy about some of the changes that were made for the remake.
In a series of posts on X, Griesemer lamented the trailer’s sequence where the Warthog vehicle moved past obstacles that were placed in its path to prevent plays from being able “to steamroll the Hunters.” “When you can just smash the crates out of the way it wrecks the encounters,” added Griesemer. “But the worst part? They put trees in the landing area of the WooHoo Jump. Lame.”
Griesemer went to tag Halo co-creator Marcus Lehto (who is a big fan of the remake) before asking the following question: “What have they done to beloved B30?!”
You aren’t supposed to be able to take the Warthog up to steamroll the Hunters. I intentionally placed rocks in the way so you had to fight them on foot. When you can just smash the crates out of the way it wrecks the encounters.

In the replies, players pointed out that it was possible to get the Warthog past the rocks in the original game, it just took a few attempts. Griesemer acknowledged this and said it was by design.
Yes, everybody, I know you can FORCE the Warthog through the gap in a variety of ways. I literally spent most of a day making it discouraging and difficult but not impossible. You’re welcome! 😆

Griesemer later wrote, “On further analysis I’m sure it’s because the vehicles take damage and so you’re just as likely to destroy the hog as get it over the rocks. If anything that makes it–worse–because–none–of the vehicle tricks are going to work anymore.”
After the initial reveal of the trailer, Griesemer questioned the point of remaking Halo.
Probably not. But I’m not sure what the point is of a “remake” anyway. Nostalgia? A new generation of fans? Occupying an enormous art team while you figure out what to do?
