Nintendo Wants To Know Your Thoughts On Its Divisive Game-Key Cards

A new survey by Nintendo has gone live, as the company wants to know what its users think of physical and digital game ownership. While there are a few general questions mixed into it, the survey primarily focuses on which format consumers prefer when purchasing games for the Switch 2.

There are various questions asked in this survey on this topic specifically, asking which factors determine if a digital game will be purchased instead of a physical one, while users can respond with multiple replies like “physical games provide a stronger sense of ownership” or “I like collecting physical games” when pressed for answers.

Game-Key Cards have been controversial since they were introduced, as the vast majority of Switch 2 games have adopted this new medium for physical releases. In essence, they’re key-authentication cartridges that still require you to download the full game to your Switch 2 system, and once completed, the cartridge must remain inside the console if you want to continue to play the game in question. The good news is that these cartridges aren’t tied to your console, so you can resell them if you want.

On the other hand, this has opened up the floor to criticism, as users have pointed out that ownership of these games is entirely reliant on Nintendo keeping its servers running. Considering that Nintendo users can no longer download Wii U or 3DS games from their respective storefronts, there is legitimate cause for concern here. In case you’re wondering, these are the Switch 2 titles that have the full games on their cartridges.

In response to this move from Nintendo, Limited Run Games said that nearly all of its games will be “true” physical releases and will contain the full game on the cartridge, but there will be some exceptions to this pledge.
