Nintendo says Mario and Princess Peach are just “good friends”

Nintendo has confirmed the relationship status of Mario and Princess Peach, claiming the pair are “just good friends”.

Princess Peach first appeared in 1985’s Super Mario Bros., with the plucky plumber needing to rescue Princess Toadstool from the clutches of King Koopa. Over the past 40 years, Mario has saved Peach’s life countless times and she’s returned the favour in a handful of games including 2006’s Super Princess Peach.

During that time, Peach has also turned down countless marriage proposals from Bowser including in 2023’s record-breaking blockbuster The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

However earlier this week Nintendo sent an update via the Nintendo App that confirmed “Princess Peach and Mario are just good friends and help each other whenever they can”.

“What’s a little 30 years of longing and physical intimacy between friends,” wrote one fan in response while another called it the “most famous situationship in media”.

“Getting friend zoned this hard makes Bowser the hero for keeping her away from him,” added a third.

Earlier this week, Nintendo confirmed Princess Peach’s new voice actor. Shortly before the Switch 2 was launched, Samantha Kelly announced she’d been replaced after 18 years with Courtney Lin voicing the character in Mario Kart World.

“Eternally grateful for Nintendo for trusting me to help carry the legacy of this icon,” Lin wrote on social media. “These characters are so much bigger than ourselves. I am so honoured and honestly can still hardly believe it. I have so much respect for all of the Peaches that came before me, especially the one I grew up with.”

They join newcomer Kevin Afghani who took on the role of Mario in 2023’s Super Mario Bros. Wonder following the retirement of long-serving voice actor Charles Martinet. Koji Takeda was also confirmed as the voice actor for Donkey Kong in World and Bananza after playing DK in the Japanese version of The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

A sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie has been confirmed for April 2026. The live-action Legend Of Zelda adaptation will then launch in 2027. Nintendo has also confirmed “various” other projects are in the works and shortly after that, it was reported that a Donkey Kong standalone film is on the way.

In other news, One Direction fans have rediscovered the band’s 2011 advertising campaign to promote the launch of Pokémon Black & White.
