Nicolas Cage is in talks to star in the fifth season of HBO crime anthology True Detective.
Since its debut in 2014, the series has followed a different case in a new city with each season. The wildly successful first season starred Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson as detectives in Louisiana.
That was followed by Colin Farrell and Rachel McAdams starring in season two, set in California, with Mahershala Ali leading the third season, which took place in Arkansas.
The most recent season, True Detective: Night Country, followed the disappearance of eight men from a research facility in Alaska, and featured Jodie Foster in the lead. The Oscar winner would go on to pick up an Emmy for her performance, the first actor in the series to win an award. Despite that success, she insisted the nature of the show meant she was “one and done”.
Now, Variety is reporting that Cage is in talks to star in season five, which will be set in the Jamaica Bay area of New York City. While the actor has spent the majority of his career in Hollywood movies such as National Treasure and Con Air, he will take on his first starring role in a TV show with Marvel spin-off Spider-Noir, set to debut sometime in 2026.
Issa López is returning as writer and showrunner, having overseen True Detective: Night Country, which became the most-watched season of the show to date with 12.7million viewers across all platforms. As yet, there is no confirmed air date for the season, although López confirmed in February that it is scheduled to come out in 2027.
