007: First Light developers have confirmed who’ll be playing James Bond in their fantasy spy video game.
007: First Light was announced earlier this year and has been created by IO Interactive, the team behind Hitman. During a dedicated Sony State Of Play presentation last night (September 3), it was confirmed Dexter: Original Sin’s Patrick Gibson would be taking on the role of James Bond.
“I am so excited to finally be able to announce that I’m playing James Bond in the upcoming game 007: First Light,” he wrote on Instagram. “Working with IO Interactive and Amazon MGM to bring a fresh take on this iconic character’s origin story has been an unforgettable experience, and I can’t wait for you all to play it.”
He’ll be joined by Priyanga Burford (M), Alastair Mackenzie (Q) and Kiera Lester (Miss Moneypenny) while a crop of new characters will also be introduced for 007: First Light including Noemie Nakia’s Miss Roth and Lennie James’ John Greenway, who’s described as Bond’s mentor.
It was also announced 007: First Light will launch March 27, 2026 for Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5 and PC.
According to an official description of the game, “In 007: First Light, Bond starts as a Navy air crewman, when against all odds, an audacious act of bravery propels him on MI6’s most challenging training program. This training coupled with his natural instinct, wits, and heart will see him grow into a fully-fledged spy. It’s a completely original standalone story, developed in collaboration with Amazon MGM Studios.”

“With 007: First Light, we’re building a wholly original James Bond experience from the ground up, one that blends the sharp tension of espionage with the bold spectacle the franchise is known for,” added CEO of IO Interactive Hakan Abrak in a statement. “The gameplay is rooted in our signature approach to immersive design, combining stealth, action, and creativity in a way that feels uniquely tailored to Bond.”
Patrick Gibson has been rumoured as 007: First Light’s James Bond after a brief teaser trailer was released earlier this year. “Really good pick, and he’s so talented. Honestly not a bad choice for the live action Bond either,” wrote one fan.
Last month Hit Man star Glen Powell shot down the idea of playing the next James Bond in Amazon’s 007 movie. “I’m Texan. A Texan should not play James Bond,” he explained. “Get an authentic Brit for that job. That’s who belongs in that tuxedo.”
It’s been confirmed that Dune filmmaker Denis Villeneuve will direct the next James Bond film, with a script written by Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight. It’s also been reported that unknown actor Scott Rose-Marsh had tested for the role but there are also rumours that Harris Dickinson, Jacob Elordi and Tom Holland are amongst those being considered as the next James Bond.
In other news, Sophie Turner has been announced as the new Lara Croft in Amazon Prime Video’s upcoming Tomb Raider adaptation.
