‘Mass Effect’ fans excited about “sequel” TV adaptation

Amazon’s Mass Effect adaptation will be a sequel set long after the events of the original trilogy – and fans are stoked.

The original Mass Effect was released in 2007 and two sequels followed in 2010 and 2012. Across the beloved trilogy, players take control of Commander Shepard on a quest to stop the destruction of the universe at the hands of The Reapers. Players are able to choose Shepard’s gender and personality, with a number of different endings to the story also available depending on the player’s choices.

Last year it was confirmed a TV adaptation was in the works from Amazon and now more details have been revealed.  “I haven’t talked about it much, but you might have heard a little something about a TV series? We’ve been partnering closely with Amazon on it, and we’re really excited with what the talented team over there is coming up with,” wrote Mass Effect boss Mike Gamble in a blog post.

“The writers room is going strong, and we’ve got a lot figured out about how it fits within the Mass Effect canon, and where it sits in respect to the new game. The show will explore a brand-new story within the universe’s timeline, and will be set after the original trilogy. It won’t be a retread of Commander Shepard’s story – because after all … that’s YOUR story, isn’t it?”

A handful of fans are worried about the Mass Effect adaptation veering away from the beloved source material but a majority are excited that it won’t be a watered down version of the original games.

“This is exactly the kind of adaptation fans were asking for. And it’s the same approach Amazon took with Fallout. As long as it’s faithful to the world from the games, it’ll be fine,” wrote one fan on Reddit. “I think creating a whole new story with new characters set within the world is the best strategy for shows based on video games,” added another. “I’m relieved. There’s no need to rehash a story people can visit themselves. Not to mention Mass Effect takes places inside an entire galaxy. It’s too restrictive. Do something new and exciting. Which is what I hope the writing team is going to do,” said a third.
