Margot Robbie felt a certain level of humiliation when the Barbie set photos were leaked earlier in the summer.
Margot Robbie is set to play one of the most iconic toys and dolls of all time and she’s also had roles in some of the biggest movies of the last few years. So you’d think that she’d have handled and been prepared for all of the pictures and buzz that can go along with that celebrity life. But that would be incorrect, and even the actress can get embarrassed from time to time.
Such was the case with Margot Robbie when behind-the-scenes pictures began leaking out on the internet earlier in the summer having to do with her next role in the Barbie movie. The shots featured her and co-star Ryan Gosling in a number of different scenes, wearing a number of different ridiculous outfits for the film. And Robbie said she was mortified by how popular they were getting in the cyber world as well as how many folks were showing up to see her on set.
Margot Robbie was appearing on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon and discussing the incidents over the summer when the set photos were leaked. It sounded like she was used to some of the normal wheelings and dealings within the celebrity world and how when working on the set of a higher profile movie, it is assumed that there would be some folks lurking around snapping pictures. But Robbie said this went beyond that, saying in part (via Variety):
“We look like we’re like laughing and having fun, but we’re dying on the inside. Dying. I was like, this is the most humiliating moment of my life…There’s probably going to be a little crowd of people who are going to take notice because, you know, we stand out a little bit in those outfits. So I knew there was going to be a little bit of attention, and probably some photos would get out there, but not like it did.”
If you were wondering what these guys looked like at the time and why Margot Robbie had this kind of response, you can see some of the pics above. It has the two in full neon outfits, fitting for a movie about the iconic Barbie and Ken coupling. It’s dialed up to ridiculous levels for the movie which is a live-action adaptation of the popular toys. So sure, they were in character but Robbie, somewhat tongue in cheek, said that she was still embarrassed.
In addition to Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, the Barbie movie will include a number of other notables. Will Ferrell is on as the CEO of Mattel and is acting as the movie’s antagonist. And there are other versions of Ken being played by Simu Liu, Ncuti Gatwa, and others. Meanwhile, others Barbies will include Issa Rae and Hari Nef. Plus, the movie has America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Michael Cera, Rhea Perlman, and others.
Barbie was written by Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach and the former is on as director. It has a working budget of around $100 million and is due out on July 21, 2023. Time will tell if the feeling Margot Robbie had here in being spotted with the outfits on for the shooting of the film will translate to when it actually hits the big screen.
I mean this is Harley Quinn we are talking about and it isn’t like Robbie has exactly been shy in some of her roles up until now. But maybe a full neon getup with rollerblades and all the other pomp and frizzle were finally just a bridge too far for the actress.
