Julia Garner has confirmed that she is still due to play Madonna in a forthcoming biopic, and recalled her audition to play the ‘Material Girl’ singer.
The miniseries is in the works at Netflix, with the legendary artist working with Deadpool & Wolverine filmmaker Shawn Levy on the project, which was announced in May. Garner will play Madonna in the series, having previously been attached to a now-uncertain movie biopic.
Appearing on the SmartLess podcast, the Fantastic Four star was asked whether the project was still going to happen. “Yeah, I mean, that’s supposed to still happen” Garner replied, adding that she’s “such a fan of Madonna’s” and “grew up listening” to her.
She then talked about the process of winning the role. “It just came about. I knew they were doing a project, making a movie about it, and then I went out to audition,” she said.
“I kind of just wanted to see if I could do it, because I wasn’t a trained dancer and I had to learn how to dance and then dance in front of her and convince her that I can dance, basically, and sing. And sing with her!”

Garner said to ease her nerves she would think: “’OK, what would Madonna do?’ Which is convince you that she deserves, you know, to be in this room, and I owned it. I was kind of like, ‘You can take it or leave it, but if you leave it, if I leave, then that’s on you’”.
While the series is still in production, the actor said: “I also feel like anything that’s great takes a long time”, implying there may not be any news in the short term.
Elsewhere, in June Madonna was singled out by Hamilton actor Anthony Ramos as the most “terrifying” celebrity to watch the show, criticising her behaviour in the audience.
