Disgraced Hollywood actor Kevin Spacey was “a little weird” on the set of Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, game director Glen Schofield said, adding that the controversy surrounding the Oscar-winner does not “taint the game” overall.
Speaking to PC Gamer, Schofield said he wanted Spacey to play the villain, Jonathan Irons, even though he understood that Spacey was not well-versed in gaming. Despite that, Schofield applauded Spacey’s acting chops, saying he gave an “unbelievable” performance in Advanced Warfare.
“He just is a great actor,” Schofield said. “Then when we said cut, you could tell the video games weren’t his thing. We had to get him a trailer. So he had a trailer outside that he would go in and he was a little bit more difficult, I would say. There’s a speech where he talks about democracy, and that’s just a really amazing speech.”
Schofield went on to say that Spacey “got a little weird once in a while on the set,” adding that the actor would say things “that just weren’t proper.”
“We all had to fake laugh. There was some stuff,” Schofield said, without elaborating.
Advanced Warfare was released in November 2014. At the time, Spacey was a top talent in Hollywood, riding the success of Netflix’s House of Cards. In 2017, actor Anthony Rapp accused Spacey of sexual misconduct, with others coming forward after him. Spacey denied the charges and was acquitted of sexual assault charges and was found not liable in the Rapp case.
Schofield said it was possible Spacey could have come back for a potential Advanced Warfare 2 despite his character’s death, but he was happy with how things turned out ultimately. “We were going to go there,” Schofield said. “I’m glad we didn’t, because it was like two months before we would have shipped when the scandal broke.”
The next Call of Duty game is Black Ops 7, and it features a lot of celebrities.
