Actor Keanu Reeves played Johnny Silverhand in CD Projekt Red’s Cyberpunk 2077, and with a sequel now in development, many are wondering if Reeves might come back.
The Matrix actor told IGN that he would “absolutely” be interested in reprising his role in the sequel.
“I’d love to play Johnny Silverhand again,” he said.
Silverhand is a former rockstar who appears in the game in the form of a digital engram long after his physical body dies. The character’s fate at the end of Cyberpunk 2077 can depend on the ending that players receive. Given that, it appears possible that he could return in Cyberpunk 2, but that’s far from a guarantee that it would happen, as that would depend on a countless combination of factors.
We also don’t know if Reeves could come back to play Johnny Silverhand again in something outside of a game. But what is clear is that Reeves is up for reprising the role in some form or another.
Cyberpunk 2, which is the game’s official title (for now, at least), officially entered pre-production earlier this year. As of July 31, 2025, there were 116 people at CD Projekt Red working on the game, up from 96 people three months prior. The overwhelming majority of staff, however, are working on the studio’s next big release: The Witcher 4.
Cyberpunk 2077 launched in December 2020 and its debut was marred by serious technical issues that proved so extreme that Sony removed the game from sale for a period of time. Despite those challenges, Cyberpunk 2077’s sales at launch were massive and have only grown higher since, climbing to 30 million as of November 2024. CD Projekt Red steadily supported and improved the game experience so extensively that the game became a prime example of a comeback story.
Very little is known about Cyberpunk 2 but developer Dan Hernberg said it will be a “uniquely American story.”
“It’s got a lot of like, punk energy, and [the tabletop game] was written by an American, so it just seems right to do it in America,” he said, referencing how the lead developers on the sequel are based in Boston.
As for a release date, that’s anyone’s guess, but it won’t be anytime soon considering The Witcher 4 is coming up next before Cyberpunk 2 is ready.
