Josh Brolin nervous about ‘The Goonies’ reboot, doesn’t want to “taint it”

Josh Brolin has shared his trepidation about a possible sequel to The Goonies, saying he doesn’t want to “taint” the memory of it.

The Marvel star enjoyed a breakthrough in his career as part of the 1985 classic, about a group of young friends who go on an adventure to find pirate treasure in order to save their home. The film was produced by Steven Spielberg and is considered a classic.

Talk of a sequel ramped up after the success of Ke Huy Quan, who thanked his fellow Goonies cast members when accepting his Best Supporting Actor Oscar in 2023 for his performance in Everything Everywhere All At Once. In February, the actor said: “I would be so happy to revisit that character and, of course, go on another Goonies adventure with my fellow Goonies, that would be amazing!”

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Brolin said his enthusiasm for a follow-up also comes with some nerves. “I hope it does (happen) because the experience was so great. The movie is received so well, generation after generation,” he said. “It’s just everything good about it. The trepidation that I have is that you release something else that taints that. I don’t want to taint what my memory of it [is].”

He then joked about the age of the cast, imagining the film as: “It’s like, ‘Oh, we came out with another,’ and then the Goonies grew up, and then they came out with their walkers, and then they fell off a cliff because they couldn’t see very well.”

He concluded that if the original creatives were on board, he would be optimistic. “Maybe it could be great,” he said. “If it’s great, you’ll know. If Spielberg approves it, you know it’s going to be good.”

In June, the cast looked back on the movie for its 40th anniversary in a retrospective for The Guardian. During that talk, cast member Sean Astin said: “I would expect that it would not include us. Maybe it’s just my desire not to raise my expectations. I root for it on behalf of the fans who love it.”
