The creators of Stranger Things have confirmed that Joseph Quinn will not be returning for the fifth and final season of the show.
The actor became a fan favourite across season four, taking on the role of the heavy metal-loving leader of the Hellfire Club, Eddie Munson. At the end of the season, he was integral in drawing the attraction of Vecna’s Demobats, as the other characters launched an attack around Creel House, and he met a grisly demise as a result.
While his character died in the fourth season, some fans have become increasingly convinced that he could still make an appearance in the forthcoming fifth season. Now, series creators Matt Duffer and Ross Duffer have officially dismissed the claims.
Reflecting on how the actor himself has been sharing cryptic hints that Munson could have a surprise appearance in the upcoming season, Matt Duffer told Empire: “I love that Joe Quinn is toying with people! But no, he’s dead.”
Reflecting on how the role helped catapult the star into huge franchises like The Fantastic Four: First Steps, and Sam Mendes’ upcoming films about The Beatles, the series co-creator said that while Quinn wasn’t written into the new Stranger Things script, it would be unrealistic for the actor to return to the series regardless due to other commitments.
“Joe is so busy anyway, that everyone should know he’s not coming back,” Duffer continued. “He’s shot like five movies since! When the hell has he got time to come and shoot Stranger Things? No, sadly, RIP. He’s fully under that ground.”

Quinn sparked rumours of a Stranger Things return last year when he spoke to ET on the red carpet for A Quiet Place: Day One – a prequel to 2018’s A Quiet Place and 2022’s A Quiet Place Part II.
He said that the “chances are high” for him meeting up with the cast and crew, and added that he would “love to come and say hello.” Then, when the reporter told him that some fans have a feeling he’ll be coming back as Eddie, Quinn replied: “I might have that feeling, too… Or maybe I don’t. Who knows?”
While Matt Duffer has ruled out hopes of Eddie Munson returning for the fifth season, he did share some information about a new character called Dr Kay. Played by Linda Hamilton, the character is a government agent working to track down Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown).
“She’s hyper-intelligent and intimidating,” Duffer teased of the new antagonist. “She’s a scientist but if she needs to, she can get into a fight and shoot a gun.”
The hit Netflix show is due to air its final season this November. So far, it’s been confirmed that the season will be split into three volumes, with the runtimes for its first instalment recently shared.
