Johnny Depp is set to star in an adaptation of A Christmas Carol from director Ti West, famous for the X trilogy of horror films.
Charles Dickens’ classic, about elderly miser Eberneezer Scrooge being visited by three ghosts on Christmas Eve, has been adapted for film a number of times over the years. Famous versions of the character include Jim Carrey in 2009’s A Christmas Carol; Sir Michael Caine in 1992’s A Muppet Christmas Carol; and Bill Murray in 1988 retelling Scrooged.
Now, Depp looks to take on the role according to Deadline, in a film that co-stars Andrea Riseborough (Birdman), with a release date set for November 13, 2026. Titled Ebeneezer: A Christmas Carol, the film has the original setting of Victorian London from Dickens’ book, and is said to focus on the “supernatural” elements of the story.
Ti West became a celebrated name in horror thanks to the success of 2022’s X, along with its prequel Pearl (2022) and sequel MaXXXine (2024). All three starred Mia Goth and have achieved cult status in a very short time.
The Paramount-produced film will arguably be Depp’s biggest role since a legal battle saw him fall out of favour with Hollywood studios.
