The final episode of the show’s first season – a spin-off of the regular Traitors series – aired on Thursday last week (November 6) with a reported 11million viewers.

Speaking in a new interview with The Times, when the star was asked what he was paid to appear in the series he said: “What have you heard?” before the interviewer said that they “read you all got a flat 40 grand”.

“Yeah, [Marler’s wife] Daisy read that too. She said to me, ‘Hold on, I thought you only got 30?’ I said, ‘Yeah, I did.’ So no, I don’t think everyone got paid the same. But I’m not bothered. It was 30 grand whether you lasted two days or three weeks – a no-brainer.”

Best known in the world of rugby, Marler made over 286 appearances for elite club Harlequins, and represented England 95 times. He retired last year, before which he was already making appearances on TV shows such as The Wheel, and hosting his podcast Joe Marler’s Things People Do.

Elsewhere, he recently opened up about his favourite moment from being on The Celebrity Traitors. “My highlight would be getting a follow from Dawn French off the back of one of the memes on Instagram” he revealed, before discussing his newfound fame thanks to the series.

“I didn’t think I’d get on the show let alone make it to the final” he added.

Since the final, the show has been renewed for a second season, which is due to return next year.

In a statement, BBC head of entertainment Kalpna Patel-Knight recently said: “Studio Lambert have done an outstanding job as The Celebrity Traitors has well and truly captivated the nation, becoming a bona fide highlight of the year bringing record numbers of people together to enjoy every twist and turn.

“In 2026 the doors of the castle will be opened again to welcome celebrity players to the game to see who can charm, who can scheme and ultimately who can survive in series two which promises to be just as unmissable as the first.”

Host Claudia Winkleman will return, too, while companion show The Celebrity Traitors: Uncloaked will also come back to BBC Two, BBC iPlayer and BBC Sounds.

Season four of the non-celebrity Traitors could be returning soon, too. The three previous seasons all aired around January, and the BBC have teased a fourth season for next year – and possibly “early 2026”.
