Jane Goodall launches Netflix’s new secret posthumous interview series ‘Famous Last Words’

A new Netflix posthumous interview series has launched following the death of primatologist Dr. Jane Goodall.

The legendary environmental activist’s death aged 91 was announced last week, with tributes flooding in from celebrities such as Leonardo DiCaprio and Billie Eilish.

In the wake of her passing, the streamer has announced new series Famous Last Words, which is based on a Danish format that sees notable figures share a final message, with the episode only released after their death.

Goodall’s is the first to be launched, with the message recorded back in March “under strict confidentiality” with producer Brad Falchuk, held securely and unedited until now.

Among the areas discussed are character Tarzan’s wife Jane, whom she called a “real wimp”, as well as musings on free will, winning arguments, spirituality, regrets as well as private thoughts.

In her final message, Goodall shares: “I want to make sure that you all understand that each and every one of you has a role to play. You may not know it, you may not find it, but your life matters, and you are here for a reason.”

Goodall was known for her pioneering work in chimpanzee research, pushing forward understanding of chimps as well as female representation in animal research. Her death was due to “natural causes”, according to a statement from the Jane Goodall Institute.

In his tribute, DiCaprio called Goodall “a true hero for the planet, an inspiration to millions, and a dear friend”, adding: “My last message to Jane was simple: ‘You are my hero.’ Now, we all must carry the torch for her in protecting our one shared home.”

Eilish said that she “continued to use her voice for those who didn’t have one”, sharing: “Thank you Jane for leading the way and caring so selflessly about our planet and all creatures big and small.”
