After James Gunn described Superman as an immigrant, the team behind the film is pushing back against criticism of the film’s message.
James Gunn Superman Backlash
A new interview with Superman director James Gunn sparked conversation over the weekend after the filmmaker described the upcoming film as “the story of America.” He elaborated, calling Superman “an immigrant that came from other places and populated the country,” adding that, at its core, the movie is about how “basic human kindness is a value — and something we’ve lost.”

Gunn didn’t shy away from acknowledging that Superman tackles themes of politics and morality, and he made it clear he’s unfazed by any backlash. But not everyone was on board — Fox News quickly voiced its disapproval.

He acknowledged that his new Superman film might resonate differently depending on where it’s viewed, noting it “plays differently” across various parts of the country. When asked by The Times how audiences in places like New York and Kansas might react, Gunn admitted he anticipates pushback from some viewers—but he’s not losing sleep over it.
“But it’s about human kindness and obviously there will be jerks out there who are just not kind and will take it as offensive just because it is about kindness. But screw them.”
