JADE won’t get royalties from ‘Before You Break My Heart’ due to Supremes sample

JADE will not be getting any royalties for her song ‘Before You Break My Heart’ due to it containing a sample from The Supremes.

The pop star and former Little Mix member released her debut solo album, ‘That’s Showbiz Baby!’ last week, which contained hit singles like ‘FUFN’ and ‘Angel Of My Dreams’. Upon the album dropping, one of the songs, ‘Before You Break My Heart’ has quickly become a favourite among fans.

However, the singer has now revealed that she will not make any money from the song due to it sampling the 1965 classic Supremes hit ‘Stop! In The Name Of Love’.

Speaking to The Sun, she responded to the interviewer who said that they enjoyed that track on the album in particular.

“It’s so funny you say you like it, I didn’t think it would be a favourite,” JADE said. “But it’s the one that’s getting the most traction online.”

When asked how she was given permission to sample the Diana Ross group, she quipped: “I am getting no royalties for that track, that’s how I got it.”

Elsewhere in the interview, the singer also revealed that she doesn’t think the album will head to the top of the charts, due to some tough competition from a fellow pop star. Looking at how the record is currently place in third place on the UK midweek album chart, JADE said: “I think Ed Sheeran will be Number One”.

JADE also spoke to NME about her new album as part of the latest in the In Conversation series, and revealed how the song ‘Before You Break My Heart’ arose.

“What’s really special about that is the chorus vocal is actually me as a child singing [that song]. It’s about me not forgetting my younger self and losing sight of that in this showbiz world,” she revealed.

“I was showing Mike [Sabath, producer] loads of different childhood videos – me singing in competitions and talent shows – and I played him [one of] me dressed as Diana Ross singing ‘Stop! In the Name of Love!’ And that just inspired the song.”

She continued, sharing her admiration for Diana Ross: “It is such an iconic song, and I think because of that, I didn’t want to make [my version] too experimental. Like, it is what it is. It’s very obvious that that’s the sample, and we run with it throughout the whole song as an homage to Diana Ross, because she’s my favourite artist of all time.”

Also in the interview with NME, JADE opened up about calling out transphobia while on stage, and shared if she plans her comments in advance, or speaks out in the heat of the moment.

“A bit of both, really. I think I’ve always been quite outspoken, but maybe as a solo artist, I feel a bit more liberated to say exactly how I feel… I think it’s important to show, especially my younger fans, that you shouldn’t be afraid to speak out about something you believe in,” she explained.

“Sometimes I do have a moment before I go on stage [where I’m] like: ‘Am I gonna do it?’ And then, you know, I just think ‘fuck it’. I’m not always going to get it right, but I think it’s important for me to stand up for what I believe in. And if that means there being consequences to that, then so be it.”

She continued: “With the transphobia stuff, it was interesting for me to get a teeny taste of what that community has to face every single day. You know, just because I spoke out about it on a public stage, I obviously got an influx of hatred and abuse – and I can handle that, because I am kind of used to that to a degree. But it was so personal and awful, and like I say, that was just a taste of what the trans community have to deal with online and in real life.”
