The TV adaptation of Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us on HBO is a big hit, but could the developer’s next game, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, leap to TV or the big screen?
It’s too soon say, but Hollywood studios are already pitching Naughty Dog, Neil Druckmann said. Speaking to Variety, Druckmann said, “We’ve already had studios approach us” about Intergalactic–based on excitement around the trailer alone. “Just having seen the trailer; they don’t know much about the game,” Druckmann said of these pitches from unspecified companies.
Given the success of The Last of Us TV series at HBO, it makes sense that studios would come knocking and try to lock up an adaptation of Naughty Dog’s next project. For his part, Druckmann said, “I want to make sure we don’t put the cart in front of the horse.” He said Naughty Dog needs to ensure Intergalactic turns into a “fantastic video game” before any transmedia opportunities are considered.
Also, it would have to be the “right partnership,” he said. If those conditions can be set, Druckmann said it “would be great” to see Intergalactic find a new audience for TV or film.
“There’s a lot of ideas of what we could do with Intergalactic, and in some ways it’s easier to expand that because it’s just how that story is structured in that universe,” he said. “So there’s some interesting conversations happening about potential projects that could come down in the future, but our priority right now is to make Intergalactic the next big, fantastic Naughty Dog game.”
As for the game Intergalactic, Druckmann said, “We’re in the thick of it. We’re making it, we’re playing it. We’re firing on all cylinders.”
“It’s the most ambitious game we’ve ever made. It’s the most expansive game we’ve ever made, maybe the most expensive, by the time we finish it,” Druckmann said.
HBO’s The Last of Us series returns in 2027 for its third and potentially final season. Season 2 just won a Creative Arts Emmy award, and the show is nominated for many more in the upcoming main Emmy awards show on September 14.
